The Explorers

Exploration and production (E&P) companies are among the last in the energy sector to report quarterly results. Fourth-quarter reports and conference calls are arguably the most important of the year, as management teams often discuss new plays they're developing or results from important well tests.

A New Dark Age for Refiners

It's been well over a year since I featured refiners in an issue of The Energy Strategist; the industry is highly cyclical and faces serious challenges over the intermediate term. That being said, investors can profit from a near-term trading opportunity that's shaping up between now and early summer.

Earning Their Keep

Coal mining and services firms were the first energy-related sectors to report fourth-quarter results. In this issue, I'll examine the trends underway in both industries and outline how to play those moves.

2010: The Year for Natural Gas

Natural gas is set to become a far more important fuel in the global energy mix in coming years. Gas is cheap, abundant and clean, making it an ideal solution to energy security, price and environmental concerns.

The Crystal Ball

In the first issue of the new year I usually provide a roadmap for the year ahead. This isn't an investment plan that's set in stone but a flexible, general guide to what areas will provide the best returns.

Minding the Alternatives

I remained cautious on alternative energy plays for most of 2009--a contrarian view. The rationale behind my skepticism has largely borne out this year. Now that the hype is subsiding, I am becoming more constructive on the group.

What the acquisition will mean.

Bumper Crop

A perfect storm is building in the Midwest that will mean far more to investors than the wording of any press release on carbon emissions that originates from Copenhagen. Ironically, while some are watching to see if China will agree to hard carbon emission targets in Denmark, Beijing is likely far more concerned with what’s currently happening in Iowa and Illinois.

Playing the (Oil)Field

In this issue I examine the prospects for my oil-levered recommendations in light of recent news and corporate earnings releases. The next installment of The Energy Strategist will examine the coal markets and provide in-depth analysis of related Portfolio holdings.

Off to a Good Start

For energy companies, the handful of quarterly numbers released to date suggest that the downturn for the oil and gas industry that began in the summer of 2008 drew to a close in the first half of 2008. The coming upturn should rival the energy bull market of 2004 through 2008 in both scope and duration.
